Sunnyside Toddler Program

Welcome! We are pleased that you are interested in learning more about our programs. Our classrooms are conveniently located on the first floor of the Haworth Hall and are fully licensed by the Kansas Department of Health and Environment. We strive to provide toddlers with responsive and nurturing care, respect and individualized learning opportunities in a family-centered atmosphere. Our goal is to work collaboratively with each family and to help each child grow, develop and achieve to their fullest potential.

Sunnyside is a full day, inclusive program for twelve toddlers (12 months and walking to about 30 months). The program operates from 7:45 am to 5:30 pm., Monday through Friday during the times that KU classes are in session, including the week of finals. Our program follows the University semester schedule and is closed during spring and fall breaks, intersessions, and all University holidays.

Sunnyside's teachers and staff work to create an atmosphere in which toddlers are loved and nurtured. Toddlers have snacks, lunch and naps at regular times each day. During play times, teachers offer several different play activities. These are designed to encourage children to explore the world of people and objects and to experience it directly with their bodies and through their senses. Our goal is for children to develop a love of learning and willingness to experiment. We also want to help children develop a sense of confidence in themselves and trust in other people.

Sunnyside's teachers are University of Kansas undergraduate and graduate students who are pursing degrees in early childhood education and related fields. In addition a Program Coordinator, and Assistant Program Coordinator and faculty member work closely with the teachers on a daily basis.

Sunnyside's teachers receive continuous training in health and safety, child development, observation and fostering children's learning. In addition, they bring a variety of diverse interests, cultural backgrounds, talents and skills to the classroom which further enriches children's experiences.
